Underwater hull cleaning in Malta and Gozo: what to know before booking
By HullTech Marine ·
Looking for boat hull cleaning without arranging a lift? HullTech Marine is a mobile service covering Malta and Gozo. Our underwater robot cleaner works on suitable hull surfaces while the boat remains in the water. Here’s how to prepare for a visit and what to ask before booking.

How does underwater robotic cleaning work?
The robot attaches to the submerged hull and moves across it while rotating brushes remove algae, slime and marine growth. The operator controls the equipment from beside the boat. You can watch the real-footage demonstration on our homepage to see the machine in action.

For a suitable underwater cleaning job, the boat stays afloat. That does not make cleaning a replacement for every haul-out: repairs, repainting and other maintenance may still require lifting the vessel. Tell us what work you need so we can discuss whether a mobile cleaning visit is appropriate.
Check your coating and the marina’s rules first
Cleaning should suit the hull surface and its coating. Share the antifouling or coating name, if you know it, along with any recent painting, damage or manufacturer instructions. Do not assume every coating can be brushed in the same way. Check with your marina or berth operator whether in-water cleaning is allowed and whether permission is needed before arranging the visit.
Booking a visit in Malta or Gozo
We travel to customers’ boats rather than operate a public shop. Send your island, marina or mooring and the boat’s exact location when you contact us. We will discuss access, suitability and an available appointment before confirming the visit. If the boat is in Gozo, mention this in your first message so the travel arrangements can be discussed.
What should you send for a hull-cleaning quote?
- Boat type and length, with the measurement unit.
- Whether the boat is in Malta or Gozo, plus its marina or mooring.
- What growth you can see and when the hull was last cleaned.
- Hull coating or antifouling details, if available.
- Recent photos and your preferred appointment dates.
A photo helps start the conversation, but it may not show the entire underwater hull. We discuss the job before confirming a price; this guide does not quote a fixed rate or promise a cleaning time.
How often should you clean the hull?
There is no single interval that suits every boat. Use your coating manufacturer’s guidance, the growth you observe and how the vessel is used to plan maintenance. Tell us about your boat’s current condition rather than relying on a universal weekly or monthly schedule.
